About the Person

Although who I am shapes my writing and my writing shapes who I am, I’m keeping things organized by discussing material on this page that doesn’t directly involve what I write. See "About the Writer" for other parts of who I am.

Where do you live?

I dwell in a land called Ohio, which is a settlement in the United States.  The people of my culture are very adaptable, capable of enduring temperatures that sometimes fluctuate 50 degrees seven times a week.

How many cats do you have?

At the exact moment in time that I’m writing this, my family has three indoor cats and two outdoor... though we had a total of a dozen at one point.  Many strays have come our way and gotten plenty of love!  Here, you'll find a gallery of many, many cats I've taken care of throughout the years.

What types of video games do you enjoy playing?

Nintendo has long been my favorite video game company because it makes games that are just plain fun.  It also helps that the company never makes violent video games: I turn down any form of entertainment with bloodshed.  The likes of Mario, Kirby, Link, Pikachu, and the rest of their colorful characters are all over my house.  My dad and I play Mario Kart games together sometimes, where I’m always the super cute Yoshi and he’s the funny Donkey Kong.

In terms of what genres I enjoy the most, those would be platformers (which involve running and jumping a lot, made famous by Super Mario Bros.), kart racers, role-playing games (such as Pokémon), action-adventure games (like The Legend of Zelda), and puzzle games.

If you’re interested in watching me play video games, be sure to check out my YouTube channel, Sir Nintendolot.  It can be nice to kick back, relax, and watch some Nintendo!

You’ve said that you enjoy listening to Japanese pop music.  How did you get into it?

Since I don’t speak any Japanese, it may seem unusual that J-pop is far and away my favorite genre of music.  Well, my love for the music began in 2004, when I turned on the TV and saw a cartoon called Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi, a silly show that followed the fictional antics of an actual Japanese pop band.  I loved their upbeat, energetic songs, so I researched them online.  Along the way, I discovered some more bands I enjoyed, and my music collection grew faster than it ever had before.  In fact, before making the J-pop discovery, I never truly listened to music in my free time.

Now, however, I’ve imported over a hundred CDs from Japan.  All the songs, from the upbeat ones to the melancholy ones, tend to have stronger emotions behind them than American ones do--at least in my opinion.  The instrumentation is often more elaborate, and the feelings that the vocalists pour into their songs are moving.  Yes, I can’t understand the lyrics, but that makes me enjoy the music even more.  Since the lyrics aren’t dictating what the song is about, each melody can say whatever it is I think it’s saying, fitting a wide variety of my moods and situations.

You’ve also said that you like watching cute cartoons.  What are some of your favorites?

Most of my favorite cartoons date back to when I was growing up.  They include Rugrats, Doug, Hey Arnold!, As Told by Ginger, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and the first three seasons of SpongeBob SquarePants.  Recently, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic has become one of my favorite things in the world since it’s so darn cute and has loveable, relatable characters.  The 2017 reboot of DuckTales is a delight as well with its fun adventures and heartwarming stories.  Some of my favorite animated movies are Aladdin, Toy Story 2, and Inside Out.

Although I’m picky with what anime (Japanese cartoons) I watch, I have really enjoyed ones such as Shugo Chara!, a cute show about the magic of fostering dreams, and Usagi Drop, a heartwarming story of a man learning what it’s like to be a father.  I prefer to watch anime with subtitles rather than in dub form.

Why do you like the number 255 so much?

I don’t like it.  I love it!
